How to Navigate Gann Lab

Gann Lab puts W.D. Gann's tools on a live chart of any coin, US stock, ETF or commodity, and Gann Bot reads that chart with you. This guide walks through every part of the screen, then a simple routine for your first chart.

1. The top bar: pick your chart

Everything about which chart you're looking at lives in the bar across the top.

  • 1Symbol box. Type a ticker and press Enter. You don't even need to click it: start typing anywhere on the page and the letters jump in here.
  • 2Load. Loads what's in the Symbol box (same as Enter).
  • 3Star. Adds the chart on screen to your Watchlist, or removes it. Gold means it's already on your list.
  • 3bMy setup (the bookmark). Every new ticker opens with just the Gann Square. Set up the tools the way you like for a ticker, then tap the bookmark and Save this setup: that ticker opens like that every time. Gold means a setup is saved.
  • 4Commodities. Tiles for gold, silver, platinum, palladium, WTI and Brent crude, plus the gold-to-silver ratio. Tap one to open its chart. (Crypto + Stocks and Stocks Only members.)
  • 5Timeframe. Daily (1D), weekly (1W) or monthly (1M) candles. Weekly is the best place to start.
  • 6Log price axis. On (log) suits long histories and big moves; off (linear) gives tighter levels near price. Your Gann Square is saved separately for each.
  • 7Status line. Exactly what you're looking at (name and market), where the prices come from, and how much history is loaded. The green dot means prices update live.
  • 8Full screen. The whole chart fills your screen, with Gann Bot inside it.
  • 9Earnings button. On US stocks, a gold button appears a few days before the company reports, with the date and the stock's usual move after its last eight reports. That range is shaded on the chart; click the button to hide or show it.

3. The tool buttons above the chart

Every Gann tool has a button above the chart. The small switch on the button shows or hides the tool straight away (gold means on). Click the tool's name to open its card with all its settings; the card has the same switch at the top, marked Show on chart while the tool is off. A new chart opens with just the Gann Square on, unless you've saved a setup for that ticker with the bookmark button.

MAThe 50, 100 and 200 moving averages (change any length, or switch to EMA), plus the Bull Market Support Band: the 20 SMA and 21 EMA with the space between them shaded. It follows the timeframe (on the weekly chart it's the classic 20-week SMA and 21-week EMA). In a bull market price tends to hold above the band; losing it on a close is a warning.

6. The Gann Square

The Gann Square is a box drawn from the all-time low. Out of its bottom-left corner fan Gann's angles: the 1x1 rises one "price per bar" every candle, and price above it is Gann's sign of an uptrend. The arcs and grid lines are support and resistance too.

1x1 angleGann's main line. Above it: uptrend. ArcsWhere time and price balance. The 80% lineOnce today passes the last verticalline, the square doubles in width. AnchorThe all-time low (or a pivot low you pick). width (bars) →price
A Gann Square from the low, with the fan of angles, two arcs and the grid. The gold dashed line is the last vertical grid line.

The settings that matter

  • Anchor to. All-Time Low (the default) or Manual: tap near a pivot low and the square starts from that candle's low.
  • Width. Automatic picks 90, 180, 360, 720, 1440 … bars and doubles once today passes the square's last vertical grid line. You can also pick a width or type a custom one.
  • Price per bar. How much price the 1x1 climbs each candle. On the log axis it's picked from 1, 2, 5, 10 … ; on linear it fits the market's own 45° line.
  • Save this square. At the bottom of the card. Saves your square for that chart on your account, separately for the log and linear axis, on any device. "Back to automatic" removes it.

7. The Square of 9

The Square of 9 turns Gann's spiral of numbers into horizontal price levels counted from a pivot. Eight steps make one full turn of the wheel (one cycle). Full cycles are the strongest levels; finer ones fill the gaps between them.

Full cyclestrongest, shown by default Half cycletick "Half cycles" Quarter turntick "Quarter turns" Minor eighthtick "Minor eighths" Next full cycle
One full cycle, divided by the finer levels you can tick in the Square of 9 card.
Tip. If the nearest Square of 9 levels are far from price, tick Half cycles, then Quarter turns, for levels closer in. The Scale setting switches between logarithmic (even percentage steps) and linear (Gann's original math).

8. Drawing your own levels

A fib drawn for you: the Cycle Fib

Switch on Cycle Fib above the chart and Gann Lab draws a Fibonacci on the previous market cycle by itself: from the cycle high (the high before the deepest fall of the last 5 years) down to the cycle low (the lowest point after that high). 0 sits at the low and 1 at the high, with every extension from 1.272 up to 4.236 above. A falling knife (a chart whose all-time low is from the last 12 months, like SQQQ) runs from the all-time high to the all-time low instead. The 0.786 and 0.886 are red. On Tesla's weekly chart it runs from the November 2021 high at 414.50 to the January 2023 low at 101.81.

  • It's automatic: the Cycle high and Cycle low dots show the points it found. For a fib on your own high and low, use the Fib retracement tool below.
  • Look back sets how many years it searches (3 to 10, or all history).
  • Everything is on by default; tick boxes hide 0.702 and 0.886, the extensions, the higher extensions (2.272 to 4.236) or the labels. Like the fib tool, the levels follow the Log price axis.

  • Fib retracement. Always click the swing high first, then the low. The retracement levels and extensions appear between and beyond them.
  • Gann levels (G). Like the Fib, but a line every eighth of the swing, from 0 to 3. Strongest: the whole numbers and 4/8 (the halfway point).
  • Anchored VWAP. One click on a candle (an important low or high). The line is the average price everyone has paid since then; the bands show how stretched price is.
  • Arrow. Click where it starts, then where it points. Pick its color and width in Drawing options. It's your own note on the chart: Gann Bot doesn't read it as a level.
  • Edit. With Select, drag a drawing's dots or body. Delete removes the selected one; Ctrl/Cmd+Z undoes.

9. Ask Gann Bot

Gann Bot sits beside the chart (the Gann Bot button at the bottom right of the page). It reads your live chart, the same tools and drawings you see, and talks you through it like a trader sitting next to you.

18 cycles base line Gann Bot How's the chart looking? It's looking moderately bullish. Price is holding the 18-cycle level at 184.13, with the base line at 214.14 as the next test overhead. A weekly close below 184.13 would weaken that. I've circled it on your chart.
Gann Bot answers in plain words and circles the levels it talks about.
  • Ask anything. "How's it looking?", "Is it a buy?", "Where's support?", "What does price per bar mean?", "How do I draw a Fib?"
  • It only reads what's on your screen. Switch a tool on and it reads it; switch it off and it leaves it out.
  • It tells you how sure it is. Levels that overlap from different tools (confluence) make its read firmer. If every level is far from price, it holds off and suggests the tool or setting that would bring levels closer.
  • It circles levels on your chart. Tap a level in the Gann Bot panel to circle it yourself.
  • Weekly overview. Under the levels in the Gann Bot panel, a few sentences on the ticker's weekly chart from every tool: which way it leans and why, where the risk/reward is best, and the resistance to be careful at. It updates every hour. Show these on my chart switches to the weekly chart on the log axis and turns on the tools it talks about.
  • Short replies are free. "ok", "done", "thanks" don't use one of your daily questions. New chat starts fresh.
  • It's education, not advice. Gann Bot tells you what the chart favours and why; the decision is always yours.

10. Your first chart, step by step

  1. Load a chart. Type BTC (or any ticker) and press Enter. Choose 1W to start with the weekly picture.
  2. Look at the Gann Square. It's on when the chart opens. Is price above or below the 1x1? Which grid line or arc is nearest?
  3. Add the Square of 9. Look for levels that sit close to a Gann Square line: that overlap is confluence.
  4. Add the Ichimoku. Is price above the cloud (strong), inside it (undecided) or below it (weak)?
  5. Ask Gann Bot "How's it looking?" It pulls the tools together, tells you how firm the read is, and what would change it.
  6. Not enough levels near price? Ask Gann Bot what to add. It knows which step (another tool, the other axis, finer Square of 9 levels, the daily chart) will line up the most levels near price.
  7. Save it. Happy with your Gann Square? Press Save this square in its card. Tap the bookmark to save which tools are on for this ticker, and star the chart to keep it on your Watchlist.
